‘While pessimists are usually right, optimists are usually successful.’
I had a brief discussion with my junior over lunch today about how perspectives can affect our choices and lives, and realised that over the years I have developed a kind of realistic optimism in my approach to life.
This I attribute to the pursuit of my dream over the years and sticking to it through the ups and downs of my journey. I rationalised that either I developed this kind of thinking, as maybe a defence mechanism of sorts, or that I would had quit or gone crazy.
So what is being realistically optimistic about?
I think it is about being able to acknowledge the current situations as it is, not deluding yourself or being overly critical, but seeing today as today. And no matter how dire the situation may be, still be able to see tomorrow’s possibility.
But seeing is only half the step, actively taking it, is the other half of the story.
It is not about wishful thinking but rather about being active and strategic in taking actions to maximise your chances. If the odds are hundred to one, then there is still a chance, but do what you can to improve your odds and go for it.
As I mentioned in my early posts, you really don’t know what’s going to happen next, so why not take your best chance in life? After all, looking at the world from this perspective keeps it fresh and exciting.
So is your cup half-full or half-empty?
Have a great week ahead! =)
